Mylene Rapha Holfort (ミレーヌ・ラファ・ホルファート, Mirēnu Rafa Horufāto) is a side character of The World of Otome Games is Tough for Mobs series. She is the Queen of Holfort Kingdom, wife of Roland and the mother of Julius and Erica Rapha Holfort.

Appearance[]

Mylene is a beautiful woman whose look belies her age. She has light blue eyes and platinum-blonde waist-length hair. She possesses a womanly, glamorous figure but still gives a gentle and tender impression.

Her casual dress consists of a long white short-sleeve dress with blue accents, brown boots with a blue ribbon headband, and a golden blue jewel pendant. In anime, she wears a blue high-neck sleeveless evening dress embroidered with a white pattern, a transparent shawl, a jewel necklace, and a tiara during official ceremonies.

Personality[]

Mylene is a benevolent queen who treats her subjects with compassion and fairness. While many spoiled, arrogant noblewomen love to throw their weight around, Mylene usually interacts with people politely yet maintains her regal bearing. Moreover, She is humble enough to acknowledge and apologize for her wrongdoing despite her high status. Her humility is in contrast with the overbearing personality of many Holfort noblewomen.

Although she still looks young and beautiful. Mylene is somewhat sensitive about her age. For example, Angelica noticed her twitched cheek after being called an old hag.[1] Furthermore, during the visit to Marquis Fraser's territory, Mylene saw her acquaintance flirting with a young woman and became bitter, as if she felt being told she was no longer young.[2]

Underneath her lovely and graceful appearance, however, Mylene has another colder and more ruthless side. Known for her dreadful moniker, Black-heart Princess, Mylene is a realist politician willing to employ any means necessary to achieve her goals. When Mylene means business, she will lose her usual loveliness and adopt a calm, no-nonsense attitude. Even Julius will lose his usual cockiness when he's in the same room with his mother in her queen mode.

In her eyes, individuals matter little in national and international politics; Personal feelings are meaningless compared to a nation's interests. Therefore, royalties and nobles must dutifully forsake their desires and happiness for the good of the country. As she holds such a pragmatic view, Mylene has long set aside her personal desires because she feels bound by her royal duty. Nevertheless, deep down, Mylene still desires simple happiness like an ordinary woman, such as experiencing life as a student and marrying for love. These unfulfilled desires make her particularly receptive to Leon's romantic advances.

Relationships[]

Family[]

Mylene met Leon for the first time during the knighting ceremony. Although she had publicly forgiven Leon for beating her son in a duel, Mylene still held a little grudge toward the young noble. Thus, she decided to visit him privately during the school festival to cause him some trouble as a punishment. But Mylene soon abandoned her little payback plot after witnessing the female students' mistreatment of the male students firsthand.

However, her relationship with Leon took an unexpected turn when the young man, out of nowhere, jokingly proposed to the queen.[3] This incident sparked a mutual attraction between Mylene and Leon. For the queen of Holfort, Leon is the first man who openly displays his affection for her without other ulterior motives. He constantly shows concern for Mylene's well-being, while her legal husband mostly neglects her. Additionally, he proves himself to be a capable and reliable man Mylene can rely on during a crisis.

Although she insists on maintaining distance between them, Mylene earnestly enjoys Leon courting her. She usually blushes whenever Leon flirts with her and when she's musing about him. Over time, Leon gradually becomes crucial emotional support for Mylene as she has to run the country and regularly tackle her husband and son's shenanigans.

Nonetheless, their relationship became somewhat cold for a while. As Mylene tried to betroth her daughter, Erica, to Leon and overcome the dire situation of the royal family, she consciously distanced herself from Leon, referring to him as Duke Bartfort instead of his name. Despite her bitter and jealous feelings, she believed it was the best course of action. Ultimately, Mylene's plan fell through, and Leon's persistence again opened her heart.

Interestingly, the close connection between Mylene and Leon is common knowledge among the Holfort nobility and the upper class of neighboring countries. Usually, their relationship would be a serious crime of adultery, resulting in severe punishment for both persons. Nonetheless, due to the unique circumstance, only a small group of people are bothered by this issue.

Angelica is the daughter of the Redgrave family and the former fiancée of Mylene's son. The two share a relatively close relationship, as Mylene was Angelica's mentor during the latter's training in the royal palace. As Julius's mother, Mylene felt responsible for her son's actions toward Angelica and was relieved that her former apprentice managed to move on.

Nonetheless, there is some awkwardness between Mylene and Angelica because the latter's fiancé openly displays a romantic attraction toward the former. Angelica is clearly not amused by this fact and often feels jealous of Mylene for being Leon's ideal marriage partner. Despite her jealousy, Angelica has the utmost faith that the monarch won't ever overstep in her courting of Leon because of her country but also it would mean betraying Angelica who is like a daughter to the queen.

Julius is Mylene's son and first child. Mylene considered Julius an obedient boy and doted on him very much when he was young. Therefore, it surprised her that Julius abruptly abandoned his engagement and the crown Prince's position to pursue Marie. Subsequently, she toughened her attitude and became strict with him. Nonetheless, she still cares for her son and often intervenes on his behalf.

Mylene has mixed feelings regarding Julius's development after his disinheritance. On the one hand, she is satisfied that he is content with his current status. On the other hand, Mylene laments about Julius straying from the path she paved for him. Humorously, she is also baffled by her son's increasing weirdness and questions what she did wrong in raising him.

Mylene loves Erica but is also strict with her for being the princess. Recognizing Erica's kindhearted nature, Mylene primarily raised her to be married off to another household rather than succeeding her as the queen. While Mylene is willing to put her daughter in a political marriage, she still wants Erica to have a decent relationship with her partner instead of being trapped in a loveless marriage like herself.

Others[]

Roland is Mylene's husband. Their marriage was a political union to secure the alliance between the Holfort Kingdom and Mylene's homeland, the United Kingdom Repard. Unfortunately, there is little warmth between the royal couple. While Mylene and Roland care for each other to an extent, their current feeling for each other is only at the level of acquaintance.

The cause of their cold relationship is mainly their incompatible personalities. While Mylene is a hard-working, selfless person who takes her royal duty seriously, Roland is a selfish slacker who privately hates being a king. Mylene particularly detests how Roland pushes all his work to her and lazes around with several young women. The personality mismatch unavoidably results in frequent quarrels and bickering between them.

It is stated multiple times in the story that Mylene hates Marie for her actions, due to her trying to achieve a reverse harem and causing many problems that happen afterward. Despite their relationship, Mylene shows general care for her as she felt her punishment as the false Saint was a little too much, and upon learning that her love interest and Marie are former siblings in their past lives is absolutely shocked. She's even more flabbergasted that her daughter is Marie's former daughter from a past life and learning more about Marie's tragic past has her pondering to see if she can help support her in some way as to show sympathy as seeing Marie in a new light, which also causes Erica and Mylene to grow closer because of this.

Abilities & Equipment[]

Mylene is an astute, capable queen who is well-versed in politics, internal affairs, diplomacy, etc. Even when she was still a princess, people in her homeland believed that Mylene was better suited for a queen regnant, making her marriage with Roland highly controversial. [4] Her ability is such that she practically runs the country in place of the lazy king. Consequently, Mylene has a strong influence within the royal court despite technically being a mere queen consort.

Angelica once noted that Mylene is wise and insightful to an incredible degree; She can easily see through another person's thoughts and feelings. Mylene also has excellent foresight and can predict potential outcomes of the situation.

As a politician, Mylene is known for her ruthless, pragmatic approach. She is unafraid to employ cold-hearted or morally questionable methods to achieve her goals. Nonetheless, Mylene's pragmatism does have flaws. While most of her decisions are sound and reasonable, there were a few times when Mylene went too far. For example, her plan to sacrifice the feudal lords to destroy the Holy Kingdom was deemed too extreme and opposed by many people, including her husband and children.

Although she has never shown any use of it, Mylene has been trained in magic since childhood. [5]

Trivia[]

  • She is the only adult who Leon wants to marry, because of her caring nature. She admits later to Angelica that Leon’s constant flirting and praise makes her regress into her younger, more naive girl who is flustered to be getting this kind of attention from someone two decades younger, but promises her never to pursue him but insists that Angelica doesn’t reprimand Leon for this behavior. A shocking statement for Angelica.
  • She was originally a princess from the country named United Kingdom Repard before becoming the Queen of Holfort Kingdom.[6]

  • She is shown to hold more political power than the current king, which makes other countries call the Holfort Kingdom; the Holfort Queendom, which prickles an already fed up king.
  • She has personally taken it upon herself to clean up any antics, situations or disasters that Leon has caused or in the middle of causing because of his track record of always resulting in victory or an increase of the nation's power. In the latest volume, she is seen doing paperwork and at the same time wondering if it's time to name a new province or territory to be named after Leon because of all his accomplishments he has garnered despite his young age and even shorter career.
